Royal fans know Prince William and Kate Middleton as a happily married couple who are the parents of three small children – Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1. But, there was a time when they were involved in an on-again, off-again romance that many people didn’t think would last. However, a royal expert says that before William and Kate got married, they were actually committed to each other in a way that no one knew about.

According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, William and Kate made a secret pact in 2007 after they had broken up twice. The first split was in 2004 because William reportedly “wanted some space.” However, they quickly reconciled and were back together for another three years before they split again. Middleton apparently wanted “more emotional commitment and support,” but William wasn’t ready for that.

But, a few months later William realized his mistake, and he invited Kate to the Seychelles off East Africa. It was there that William promised Kate that she was “the one,” but he wasn’t ready to get married yet. In order to prevent the future Duchess of Cambridge from walking away from the relationship, William “promised her his commitment, and said he would not let her down, and she, in turn, agreed to wait for him,” wrote Nicholl in her book William and Harry.

However, it took William another three years to propose, and Kate’s mom Carole Middleton was concerned that her daughter didn’t have a ring on her finger after nearly eight years of dating the future king.

“Kate’s life has come to a bit of a standstill,” an insider told Nicholl, “[Carole] says Kate can’t get on and do normal things because of the public interest in her. She’s of the opinion privately that William should make an honest woman out of her so that she isn’t left waiting in limbo.”

The couple finally announced their engagement in November 2010, and then they tied the knot in April 2011. Now, more than eight years later, the couple is enjoying their summer with their three children. The Cambridges just left Balmoral Castle in Scotland after spending time with Queen Elizabeth.

The family returned to England just in time for Prince George and Princess Charlotte to start the new school year at Thomas’s Battersea.
